ASEAN summit highlights: PM Modi says India strives for world peace, contributes most in UN Peacekeeping Forces

On the sidelines of the 31st ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit being held in Manila, Philippines, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump.

Following his meeting with Trump, PM Modi said that the relations between the two nations are growing and that the two countries are working for future interests of Asia and humanity. The meeting lasted for about 45 minutes behind closed doors. PM Modi then went on to address ASEAN Business summit in Manila and talked about India’s jump in ease of doing business ranking and emerging as a frontrunner in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

He also attended a reception held by the Indian Community and said that India strives for world peace. During the day, PM Modi visited the International Rice Research Institute and Mahaveer Philippines Foundation.

8:47 pm: The two leaders also discussed terrorism during the meeting, specifically related to regions of India’s western front all the way to the middle east.

8:45 pm: Jaishankar said that the thrust of the bilateral talks was mainly on economic issues, trade and investment was also discussed.

11.30 am: PM Modi was visiting the Mahaveer Philippine Foundation which was set up by Manila’s Indian origin Mayor, Dr. Ramon Bagatsing. “The Foundation has been instrumental in the fitment of the Jaipur Foot to needy amputees. About 757 amputees benefitted from the programme in 2017,” the PMO tweeted.

Various parts of the Ramayana were beautifully highlighted in the Rama Hari. This shows our deep historical bonds and shared heritage,” he tweeted.

9.45 am: PM Modi Narendra visited the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos. He inaugurated the Rice Field Laboratory during his visit.

The institute is working towards developing a better quality of rice seed and addressing food scarcity issues, the PMO tweeted. “A large number of Indian scientists are working in IRRI and contributing to R&D in these areas,” it added.

9.30 am: PM Modi will be meeting Donald Trump at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel in Manila Bay where the latter is staying.

9.15 am: Ahead of PM Modi’s 1 pm (IST) meeting with President Trump, let’s take a look at what is on the agenda.

India is keen to know more about Trump’s South Asia strategy, which he announced in August. They are hoping the President would “walk the talk”.

“A lot has happened between the Prime Minister’s trip to the White House and now. The South Asia strategy, which was announced in August, has laid out certain red lines for Pakistan. We will be interested to know about Trump’s perception of what Pakistan is doing on taking action against terrorist groups and individuals,” official sources told The Indian Express.

Also up for discussion is Trump’s visit to China. Indian officials are keen to know what has transpired during Trump’s visit to China.

“Trump’s assessment of China under Xi, in his second term, will be key to understand how the relationship between Washington and Beijing is going to evolve. The fact that he chose to go there, right after the 19th Congress of the Communist Party, signals the importance he attaches to the relationship,” sources said.

9.00 am: On Sunday, before PM Modi landed in Manila, MEA officials have met their counterparts from America, Australia and Japan. Sources told The Indian Express that issues concerning the Indo-Pacific region were discussed in light of China’s activities in the region. All parties agreed that a “free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region serves the long-term interests of all countries in the region and of the world at large”.

8.45 am: Meanwhile, PM Modi expressed his condolences over last night’s boat tragedy in Andhra Pradesh. At least 16 people died after a tourist boat capsized near Vijayawada.

“Capsizing of a boat in the Krishna River is anguishing. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy. Andhra Pradesh Government and NDRF have been working on rescue operations,” the PMO tweeted.

On Sunday, Modi arrived in Manila on a three-day visit to attend the ASEAN -India and East Asia summits. The ASEAN region, including India, comprises a combined population of 1.85 billion people, one-fourth of the global population.

Modi and Trump met informally on Sunday evening before a dinner hosted by the Philippines President for leaders ahead of the ASEAN summit. New Delhi is going to Monday’s bilateral meeting with the expectation that Trump, who had warned Islamabad of consequences if it continues to support terror groups while announcing his Afghan and South Asia policy in August, will “walk the talk”.
